Tips for Brewing the Perfect Glass of Iced Tea
·
Keep you drip coffee or tea maker clean of residue.
·
Use fresh, clear, and clean cold water free of impurities.
·
Store your tea in air tight containers for maximum freshness.
Brewer
Method – using filter
packs
· Place the filter pack of tea into
your coffee or tea filter basket with the seam-side down.
·
Fill your brewer with
water and brew as you normally do.
·
Option: For greater extraction and
a stronger tea, empty the contents of the filter pack into a filter and brew as
normal.
·
While the tea brews, prepare your
tea pitcher:
§ Add your desired amount of sugar
or sweetener,
§ Add a little water to dissolve
your sweetener,
§ Pour in your freshly brewed tea,
and
§ Dilute with ice (preferably) or
cold water.
Refrigerator
Method – using filter
packs
· Place one filter pack
into ½ gallon iced tea pitcher.
·
Add fresh cold water
and allow to sit in refrigerator for 8-12 hours.
· Remove filter pack and
serve.
Hot Water
Method – using filter packs
· Place 24 ounces of hot
water in a pitcher.
· Add one filter pack of
tea and steep for 3 minutes.
· Remove bag, add 3 cups
cold water and chill.
Southern-Style
Iced Tea
·
Bring 5 cups of fresh cold water
to a boil.
· Remove the tags from
tea bags and tie your teabags together so
they'll be easier to remove from the pitcher.
· Pour over 5 tea bags (use double the number of tea bags
to make a strong pot of tea)
· Steep for 3 - 5 minutes.
·
Remove the tea bags
·
Add 3 - 5 cups of cold water
(depending on your preference of tea strength).
·
Pour over ice in glass.
· Add sugar or sweetener and top
with lemon.
Sun-Tea
(Makes 1 gallon)
·
This works best with black
caffeinated tea. (Herbal tea should always be prepared with boiling
water, even when served cold).
·
Place 9 tea bags (remove
the tags from tea bags and tie the bags together) in a gallon sized jar.
·Then, fill with cold water.
·
Cap loosely and place in hot
sunshine (direct sunlight) for 3 to 4 hours.
·
Remove tea bags.
·
Add sweetener or lemon, if
desired.
·
Pour into ice filled glasses.
·
Refrigerate within an hour after
brewing. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours.
Why Does Some Iced Tea Turn Cloudy?
· Iced tea turns cloudy when you use
a tea, or tea blend, that's made for brewing hot
tea, not iced tea.
·
A stronger brewed tea (if that's
your taste preference) tends to cloud more readily than does a weaker one.
·
Even tea specifically blended for
iced tea can turn a little cloudy when you use hard water for brewing. It's all
the "hard water minerals" suspended in the iced tea that gives it that
slightly cloudy look. However, the taste of the iced tea is rarely affected.
·
Solutions:
§ Add a small amount of
boiling water to clear it up.
§ Use bottled or
filtered water and allow the tea to cool a little more before refrigerating.
